| For You have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. Psalm 56:13
|
At the moment of conception, when a new life is formed within the womb, there is already the reality of death. Some would say that death is just a natural part of life, that one goes from life to death. This, however, is not true. Death is not natural; death is a completely unnatural corruption of God’s perfect creation. Death is the result of sin. It is only because of sin that anyone dies. Death does present a problem for humanity. The pattern of life to death is not something that scientific discovery has ever figured out how to stop or reverse. It would seem that there is no escaping death. God does something extraordinary for us through His Son and in His crucifixion and resurrection provides a complete reversal of this so-called natural cycle of life and death. Bearing the weight of the whole world’s sin upon His shoulders and defeating death and the grave, Christ made right what went wrong. Through Baptism, all believers are united with Him in His death—which puts sin to death in us—and united with Him in His resurrection. That last great enemy of death has been defeated. We have eternal life in Christ! |
Gracious Lord, grant by Your Holy Spirit that we walk continually in the grace You have given through Baptism. Amen. |
